Cord blood and cord tissue stem cell banking

The umbilical cord is a precious source of stem cells which is only available at the time of your child’s birth

Stem cells are the building blocks of life, these precious cells regenerate and protect the body from within.

The stem cells found in the placenta and umbilical cord at birth contain lifesaving stem cells unique to your baby. Future Health Biobank can give you the opportunity to store these cells in case you need them in the future for the treatment of your child as well as the potential to treat other members of the family too.

To date there have been over 1 million transplants worldwide using stem cells and there are over 5000 clinical trials ongoing. Not only could stem cells from your baby offer treatment of life-threatening diseases such as leukaemia, anaemia and thalassemia, but scientists also believe stem cells could offer treatment of life-altering illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and cerebral palsy.

There are two types of stem cells present in the umbilical cord; haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are found in the blood that passes to your baby through the umbilical cord and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) which are found in the umbilical cord itself.
Stem cells found in the cord blood (HSCs) have been used in treatment for blood related illnesses since 1988 and are now commonly used to treat over 85 diseases, including leukaemia, anaemia and thalassemia.

The umbilical cord tissue contains a very high concentration of MSCs. This stem cell is believed to be hugely diverse meaning that it could be used for regenerative therapies including the production of connective tissue, such as bone and cartilage. Astonishingly, these unique stem cells have also been linked to the treatment of diabetes, heart disease and cerebral palsy.

Future Health Biobank is proud to offer two types of processing methods; Volume reduced and whole blood processing.
