Umbilical cord blood stem cells
Your baby’s umbilical cord blood is a rich source of ‘multipotent’ stem cells, meaning they can regenerate and repair a wide range of blood and tissue cells in the body. They are a 100% DNA match to the baby and a 25% match to a sibling, and can treat genetic blood diseases, immunity disorders, types of cancer and leukaemia. Cord blood banking involves collecting, processing and storing these cells from the umbilical cord blood after your baby is born, for use in future therapies.
Umbilical cord tissue stem cells
Cord tissue is known to be a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). They are known to transform into a variety of cell types in the human body, including bone, cartilage, muscle and fat cells. The number of MSCs in your body slowly decreases with age, so cord tissue banking offers an effective way to preserve these valuable cells. Currently there are around 300 ongoing clinical trials worldwide. They are also a 100% DNA match to the owner.
