Not only could stem cells from your baby offer treatment of life-threatening diseases such as leukaemia, anaemia and thalassemia, but scientists also believe stem cells could offer treatment of life-altering illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and cerebral palsy.
There are two types of stem cells present in the umbilical cord; haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are found in the blood that passes to your baby through the umbilical cord and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) which are found in the umbilical cord itself.
Stem cells found in the cord blood (HSCs) have been used in treatment for blood related illnesses since 1988 and are now commonly used to treat over 85 diseases, including leukaemia, anaemia and thalassemia.
The umbilical cord tissue contains a very high concentration of MSCs. This stem cell is believed to be hugely diverse meaning that it could be used for regenerative therapies including the production of connective tissue, such as bone and cartilage. Astonishingly, these unique stem cells have also been linked to the treatment of diabetes, heart disease and cerebral palsy.
