What are dental pulp stem cells?

Dental pulp stem cells are found in the soft, connective tissues in the centre of each tooth. Extensive ongoing research has shown strong potential for these tissues to contain mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs); a type of stem cell that can turn into and replicate a variety of other cells within the human body. These valuable dental pulp stem cells can be extracted from milk teeth and healthy adult wisdom teeth. Both have the same exciting potential for regenerating tissue and can be processed and stored at a specialist biobank – for use in future treatments. Of course, dental pulp stem cells are a 100% DNA match to the donor, giving them a higher chance of success in treatment.

How stem cells work

Stem cells are found in various body tissues: blood, muscle, skin, bone marrow, nerves and the liver. The key property of all stem cells is that they are undifferentiated, meaning they can replicate endlessly and replace/renew many types of damaged cells in the body. In fact, stem cells can divide and replicate over 200 types of specialist cells that are linked to the function of your immune system, heart, oxygen distribution and much more.

With this power to renew damaged cells that are so crucial to our bodies’ health, umbilical cord stem cells are currently used in 85 treatments. Research into dental pulp stem cells is slightly behind that of cord blood, but MSCs from multiple tissues are currently in clinical trial for over 300 conditions, including:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Arthritis
  • Dental pulp regeneration
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Neurological diseases
  • Immunodeficiency diseases

If you or your child’s healthy teeth are stored by a professional stem cell bank, the potential stem cells within will be processed and cryogenically frozen for later use. If treatment for a disease or condition is required in the future, these frozen cells could organically repair and heal damaged body tissue.

Research behind dental pulp cells and stem cells

Scientists have been studying dental pulp stem cells for nearly two decades. Many studies and over 200 clinical trials later, dental pulp stem cells show potential for regenerative therapies which could treat a range of diseases and conditions from dental related problems to nerve repair. Research shows that dental pulp stem cells share similar behavioural characteristics to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from other tissues. MSCs are found in many tissues throughout the body and can turn into and replicate muscle, nerve, bone, fat and cartilage cells. They also have the ability to change how the immune system behaves and therefore show potential to treat a range of immune disorders. Stem cells found in teeth may, in the future, be used to repair damage throughout the body and be used in regenerative medicine.
