Ozzy Osbourne receives experimental stem cell therapy for Parkinson’s

Ozzy Osbourne is reportedly making an “amazing” recovery after receiving stem cell therapy in Panama for Parkinson’s disease. The legendary Black Sabbath front-man was diagnosed with the brain disorder in 2003, and recently delayed his 2020 North American tour so he could go for the experimental new treatment.

Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating neurodegenerative condition that causes stiff and inflexible muscles, leading the slow movement and tremors. It can also cause a range of other physical and psychological symptoms, such as depression, insomnia and memory loss.

While no details about Ozzy’s stem cell treatment have yet been released, it seems to have lessened his symptoms; improving quality of life. Speaking of his recovery at home, Ozzy’s daughter Kelly said:

To see this progress after just one stem cell treatment is amazing. He wants to get up, he wants to be active. He wants to be part of the world again. He walks better, tells better, his symptoms wither. He is restored to the muscle strength that is needed after a spinal injury.

Private clinics like Ozzy’s are offering stem cell therapies for Parkinson’s disease, but none are clinically proven yet. However, cases like this combined with pioneering research will help scientists to develop an approved treatment.

Claire Bale, Head of Research at Parkinson’s UK, released a statement following Ozzy’s therapy:

Stem cells…hold huge promise…At Parkinson's UK we're driving forward pioneering research, including investigating stem cells, to find better treatments and a cure. People affected also have a vital role to play, through taking part in research to move new treatments forwards.
